Resolution No. 418636o RESOLUTION NO. 4186 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CYPRESS COMMENDING MR. WILLIAM B. CALTON FOR HIS 38 YEARS OF SERVICE TO PUBLIC EDUCATION AND UPON HIS RETIREMENT AS SUPERINTENDENT OF THE CYPRESS SCHOOL DISTRICT. WHEREAS, William B. Calton, known to his friends and colleagues as Bill, was born in Ten Sleep, Wyoming; and WHEREAS, Bill received his B.S. Degree in 1954 from Eastern Montana College and his Master's Degree in Education from the University of Oregon in 1959; and WHEREAS, Bill and his wife, Shirley, have been married for 38 years and are the proud parents of two sons and twin daughters and grandparents of ten; and WHEREAS, Bill began his teaching career in 1955 at the Lockwood Jr. High School in Billings, Montana and in 1960, relocated to California to teach in the Rowland School District in Rowland Heights, where his administrative talent was recognized as he served as Administrative Intern to the Assistant Principal, Administrative Assistant to the Assistant Superintendent, and Coordinator of Elementary Education respectively during 1962 through 1968; and WHEREAS, in 1968 Bill was appointed as Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services at the Cypress School District and after serving only one year in this position, was promoted to Superintendent of the Cypress School District, a position which he has held for the past 24 years; and WHEREAS, Bill's commitment to providing a quality educational program to our children has resulted in the following accomplishments, among others: a strong curriculum and good discipline program; child care centers for all schools; technology labs and expanded libraries; exceptional reading program with strong phonics thrust; Little Olympics and outdoor education for all sixth grade students; small class sizes (an average of 25 per teacher for the past four years); active and viable Parent Teacher Associations and School Site Councils; and well maintained sites and facilities throughout the School District, which have received outstanding Program Quality and Compliance Reviews; and WHEREAS, during his tenure at the Cypress School District, Bill has initiated and supported several internal programs resulting in a strong viable relationship among the administrators, teachers and staff which, in turn, provides a positive impact upon the students; and WHEREAS, Bill is a Charter Member of the Association of California School Administrators and a Life Member of the National Education Association; and WHEREAS, the City of Cypress and the Cypress School District have been very fortunate in having such a dedicated and respected individual like William "Bill" Calton whose commitment to excellence in education has provided our children with a strong foundation for achieving future goals. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Cypress does hereby commend MR. WILLIAM B. CALTON for his 38 years of service to public education and extend sincere CONGRATULATIONS upon his retirement as Superintendent of the Cypress School District, and further convey our BEST WISHES for the future.
