RESOLUTION NO. 3870
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CYPRESS
COMMENDING MR. JOHN KANEL FOR HIS 20 YEARS OF
SERVICE ON THE CYPRESS CITY COUNCIL.
WHEREAS, in February 1961, John Kanel, his late wife, Jeanine
and son, Tony relocated to the City of Cypress; and
WHEREAS, shortly thereafter, John Kanel was appointed to the
Cypress Planning Commission which was the beginning of his public
service to the citizens of Cypress as in 1963 Mr. Kanel was appointed
to fill a vacancy on the Cypress City Council; and
WHEREAS, in 1964 John Kanel was elected to a four -year term
on the City Council, followed by his reelection in 1968 and 1972; and
WHEREAS, John Kanel vacated his Council seat in 1976;
however, the voters of Cypress returned Mr. Kanel to the City Council
in 1982 and 1986; and
WHEREAS, during his tenure on the City Council, John Kanel
was elected by his fellow Council Members to serve as Mayor in 1970,
1984, and 1986,and served many times as Mayor Pro Tem; and
WHEREAS, John Kanel has been an outstanding representative of
the City of Cypress at the League of California Cities, Orange County
Division; Orange County Sanitation District; Southern California
Association of Governments; and the Orange County Vector Control
District; and
WHEREAS, John Kanel was elected in 1970 by the Orange County
Mayors Selection Committee to serve as an original member of the
Orange County Transit District for over six years, and in 1988 was
appointed to the Orange County Local Agency Formation Commission; and
WHEREAS, John Kanel has also been active in other civic
endeavors which included being a member of the Board of Directors of
the Pony Colt and Little Leagues; Cypress Boys and Girls Club;
Chairman of the Tri- Cities United Fund Campaign; Charter member of the
Jr. Chamber of Commerce; Cypress Lions Club; and the American Legion
Post 295; and
WHEREAS, for his dedicated community involvement, John Kanel
was the recipient of the Cypress College's Americana Award in 1981;
and
WHEREAS, during his many years on the City Council, John
Kanel has seen Cypress grow from a dairy city of 1100 to an
outstanding community of approximately 45,000, attracting many
prestigious businesses to relocate here; and
WHEREAS, John Kanel has been a responsive voice for the
citizens of Cypress and has contributed significantly towards
establishing Cypress as a well- balanced community of high standing in
Orange County.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of
the City of Cypress does hereby commend MR. JOHN KANEL for his 20
years of service and dedication to the City of Cypress and extends
sincere Best Wishes for the future.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the City Council of the City of Cypress
at a regular meeting held on the 14th day of January 1991.
