RESOLUTION NO. 988
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CYPRESS
COMMENDING CHESTER GUTZMAN ON BEING NAMED OUTSTANDING
VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS COMMANDER FOR ORANGE AND RIVERSIDE
COUNTIES.
WHEREAS, Chester Gutzman upon becoming a resident of the City of Cypress
in 1964 displayed an active interest in civic activities; and
WHEREAS, his involvement prompted his participation as Chairman of the Park
and Recreation Study Committee, President of the Park and Recreation Advisory
Board, Chariman of the School District Report Card Committee and Second Vice
President of the Board of Directors of the Cypress Civic Center Corporation; and
WHEREAS, Chester Gutzman further demonstrated his interest in the community
through his membership in the C. R. Rogers Memorial Post 9847, Veterans of Foreign
Wars, of Cypress -Los Alamitos which currently has a membership of approximately 90
persons, and for which he earned eligibility for membership through his service in
the armed forces during World War II and the Korean War; and
WHEREAS, as a member of the VFW, Chester Gutzman has contributed many hours of
his time in promoting various programs of the VFW, such as the "buddy poppy" sale,
the "Voice of Democracy" program for high school students and the "Lite -a- bike"
program for bicycle safety in the elementary schools, as well as the initiation of
the Memorial Day activities at Forest Lawn; and
WHEREAS, in recognition of his leadership abilities, Chester Gutzman has held
the offices in the Cypress -Los Alamitos VFW Post of Jr. Vice Commander, Sr. Vice
Commander and is beginning his second year as Commander; and
WHEREAS, in his capacity as Commander, he has represented his Post at all
district and county council meetings throughout the year and has further participated
in many events as a member of the Orange County installing team and as color and
honor guard for the state Commander; and
WHEREAS, as a result of his active participation and interest in the programs
of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Chester Gutzman was recently named Outstanding
1968 -69 Commander of the Second District, which comprises 30 posts in Orange and
Riverside Counties; and
WHEREAS, this award has brought recognition and honor not only to the Cypress -
Los Alamitos VFW Post, but also to the entire community of Cypress.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESLLVED that the City Council of the City of Cypress
hereby does congratulate Mr. Chester Gutzman for being named the Outstanding
1968 -69 Commander for the second district of the C. R. Rogers Memorial Post 9847,
Veterans of Foreign Wars, and does further commend him for the recognition which
he has brought to the City of Cypress.
PASSED AND ADOPTED at a regular meeting of the City Council of the City of
Cypress held on the 23rd day of June, 1969.,
