Resolution No. 3078RESOLUTION NO. 3078 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CYPRESS SUPPORTING THE LONG BEACH NAVAL SHIPYARD. WHEREAS, the Long Beach Naval Shipyard is the second largest employer in the Southern Los Angeles /Orange Counties area with expenditures of 300 -350 million dollars for the last three years annually; and WHEREAS, these expenditures annually represent a major contribution to the counties' business economy, tax base and employment market; and WHEREAS, the loss of the USS Albert David and USS O'Callahan from the Long Beach Naval Shipyard's work package and the abrogation of contracts for the USS Peleliu and the loss of the commissioning of the USS Missouri to San Francisco, rather than Long Beach, have resulted in a reduction of 36% or $125,223,546 in the 1987 fiscal year budget, with an expected layoff of 1,300 workers this summer; and WHEREAS, a layoff now of 1,300 employees will cost the Navy between 12 - 13 million dollars to re- employ and train personnel in February 1987 when work is scheduled to be available. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Cypress City Council endorses the efforts of the City of Long Beach and local organizations to strive for the return of the USS Albert David and USS O'Callahan to the Long Beach Naval Shipyard and, further, supports the Long Beach Naval Shipyard in maintaining its active status.
