RESOLUTION NO. 2947
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CYPRESS
CONGRATULATING SUPERVISOR HARRIETT M. WIEDER ON HER
2,435 DAYS IN OFFICE AS A MEMBER OF THE ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF SUPERVISORS.
WHEREAS, Harriett M. Wieder was first elected to the Orange County Board of
Supervisors in 1978 and was re-elected in 1982, having the honor of being the first
woman to be elected to this position; and
WHEREAS, representing the Second Supervisorial District consisting of the
Cities of Cypress, Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, Los Alamitos, Rossmoor, Seal
Beach, Stanton, Sunset Beach, and Westminster, Harriett was elected by her peers as
Vice Chairman in 1980 and again in 1982, and served as Chairman of the Board in
1984; and
WHEREAS, prior to her election to the Orange County Board of Supervisors,
Harriett was elected to the Huntington Beach City Council in 1974, serving with
distinction on the Council and was elected by her Council colleagues as Mayor in
1976; and
WHEREAS, Harriett's introduction into the governmental arena was her
appointment as Executive Assistant to Mayor Sam Yorty, serving in this capacity from
1963 to 1973; in addition to serving as Coordinator of the Mayor's Community
Advisory Committee of 2,500 members; and
WHEREAS, in addition to her many appointments to local agencies as a
representative of the Orange County Board of Supervisors, Harriett has been
appointed by the President of the United States to serve on the Intergovernmental
Advisory Council in Education, Ad Hoc Committee on Block Grants, and was recommended
by the White House for her appointment to the National Drinking Water Advisory
Council; and
WHEREAS, inspite of her busy schedule, Harriett still finds time to contribute
to her community by serving on the Executive Board of the Orange County Boy Scouts
of America, Member of the KOCE Channel 50 Citizens Advisory Committee, Member of the
League of Women Voters, to name a few; and
WHEREAS, because of her strong dedication to the well-being of her fellow
citizens and the communities she serves, Harriett has been a recipient of many
awards, which include the Distinguished Community Service Award in 1982 from the
Anti -Defamation League of B'nai B'rith, 1982 Distinguished Civic Leadership Award
from the Orange County Chapter of the California Council of Civil Engineers and Land
Surveyors, and the 1979 Top Hat Award given by the Business and Professional Women's
Club; and
WHEREAS, Harriett Wieder will be honored at a reception on July 2, 1985 in
tribute to her 2,435 days in office as a member of the Orange County Board of
Supervisors.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Cypress City Council is honored to have
this opportunity to join SUPERVISOR HARRIETT WIEDER'S many friends and colleagues in
recognizing her for giving of much enery, time and deep commitment and devotion to
the citizens of the Second Supervisorial District of Orange County and extends
sincere Congratulations to SUPERVISOR HARRIETT M. WIEDER on her outstanding 2,435
days in office and conveying continued success and Best Wishes for the future.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the City Council of the City of Cypress at a regular
meeting held on the 24th day of June 1985.
