RESOLUTION NO. 2971
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CYPRESS
COIMENDING AND ENDORSING CAMP RONALD MCDONALD
FOR GOOD TIMES.
WHEREAS, Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times is a camping facility
for young cancer patients between the ages of 7-18 which was founded in
1982 by Pepper Abrams, whose son, David has leukemia, as a means for
those children strickened by cancer to be able to participate in camp
surroundings like other children; and
WHEREAS, Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times is a project of the
Southern California Children's Cancer Services, Inc., a non-profit
corporation founded in 1977 to build the Los Angeles Ronald McDonald
House which provides assistance and a place to stay for the families of
young cancer patients undergoing treatment at the Children's Hospital of
Los Angeles; and
WHEREAS, since 1982 Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times has
provided summer and winter camp sessions at rented facilities in the Los
Angeles area; however, through the generous efforts of celebrated
supporters, which include President Reagan, Dustin Hoffman, Neil
Diamond, Richard Chamberlain, and O.J. Simpson, Pepper Abrams' dream of
establishing a permanent facility has become a reality with the approval
of a bill signed by Governor Deukmejian appropriating funds for the
State of California to purchase land in the Santa Monica Mountains, 457
acres of which were leased to Camp Ronald McDonald; and
WHEREAS, although many generous supporters and corporations have
donated more than $2 million to start the permanent camp, additional
financial assistance is required to complete the project which will be
the first year-round camp of its kind in the country open to any child
with cancer, regardless of their ability to pay; and
WHEREAS, the Camp has received national recognition through its
coverage in Life magazine, Reader's Digest, Good Morning, America
television program and, this fall, will be featured on the Highway to
Heaven television series with Actor -Director Michael Landon; and
WHEREAS, Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times is an opportunity for
all these courageous children to experience normal childhood activities
and will also provide a retreat for the patients and their families from
the constant stress and emotional suffering.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Cypress City Council hereby
commends the Founder of Good Times, PEPPER ABRAMS, its BOARD OF
TRUSTEES, DIRECTORS, CONSULTANTS, and those who have generously
contributed to its formation and wholeheartedly endorses CAMP RONALD
MCDONALD FOR GOOD TIMES by proclaiming AUGUST and SEPTEMBER 1985, as
"CAMP RONALD MCDONALD FOR GOOD TIMES MONTHS" in the City of Cypress and,
further, urge the Orange County Board of Supervisors and all Orange
County Cities, together with all other cities in Southern California, to
join in this effort by issuing similar proclamations in hopes of
soliciting the support of all citizens in this most worthwhile project.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the City Council of the City of Cypress at a
regular meeting held on the 12th day of August 1985.
