Resolution No. 3002471 RESOLUTION NO. 3002 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CYPRESS COMMENDING MRS. MILDRED VESSELS FOR OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT, CITIZENSHIP, AND PARTICIPATION AND ACHIEVEMENT IN THE GROWTH OF THE QUARTER HORSE RACING INDUSTRY. WHEREAS, MILDRED "MILLIE" VESSELS began participation in the Quarter Horse Racing business after her marriage to the late Frank Vessels, Jr. in 1948 and together with Frank Vessels, Jr.'s parents, the late Mr. & Mrs. Frank Vessels, Sr., began to develop the Los Alamitos Race Track when it officially began pari-mutuel wagering in 1951; and WHEREAS, upon assuming the leadership of the Los Alamitos Race Track in 1974, MILLIE continued the growth and expansion of the track where today it is considered the premier quarter horse track in the United States; and WHEREAS, MILLIE serves on numerous boards and committees associated with the horse racing industry and also participates and serves in many organizations on behalf of worthy and charitable causes, such as the Fillmore Condit Foundation Club of the Long Beach Community Hospital, St. Mary's Hospital Guild of Long Beach, Assistance League of Long Beach, and the Grant Beckstrand Cancer Foundation; and WHEREAS, in 1980, MILLIE was the recipient of the 3rd Annual Colonel Barney Oldfield Humanitarian of the Year Award presented by the American Research & Medical Services, Inc. (ARMS Foundation) and was awarded, in 1983, the Orange County Sports Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement Award by the Orange County Sportswriters Association. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Cypress City Council and all the citizens of Cypress hereby commends MILDRED VESSELS for her long standing devotion to her family and for her great contributions to the Quarter Horse Racing Industry and especially to the LOS ALAMITOS RACE TRACK, and that MILDRED VESSELS is thanked and honored for the personal commitments and help given by her to so many charitable groups and organizations. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Cypress City Council will honor MILLIE VESSELS on November 9, 1985, at the Los Alamitos Race Track for her outstanding accomplishments and that the City of Cypress is proud to have MILDRED VESSELS as a citizen of our community and extends the most sincerest Congratulations and wishes the best to MILLIE in all her future endeavors.
