Resolution No. 2606162 RESOLUTION NO. 2606 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CYPRESS COMMENDING MRS. MILDRED VESSELS ON RECEIVING THE ORANGE COUNTY SPORTS HALL OF FAME LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD. WHEREAS, Mrs. Mildred "Millie" Vessels started in the racing business after her marriage to the late Frank Vessels, Jr. in early 1948 and was instru- mental in developing the Los Alamitos Race Course when it officially began pari-mutuel wagering in 1951; and WHEREAS, since becoming the President of the Race Course in 1974, Millie has witnessed the tremendous growth of the Race Track, which is now recognized as one of the top quarter horse facilities in America; and WHEREAS, in addition to her involvement with the Race Track, Millie also owns and operates the Vessels' Stallion Farm, one of the largest quarter horse breeding farms in the nation, and the Los Alamitos Country Club and 18 hole Golf Course, and still has time to give of herself to charitable organizations; and WHEREAS, Millie currently serves as a Director of KOCE-TV (Channel 50) Foundation, Grant Beckstrand Cancer Foundation, American Quarter Horse Asso- ciation, and the California Federation of Race Tracks, as well as having served on committees and boards of directors of several other organizations which include the Fillmore Condit Foundation Club of the Long Beach Community Hospital, St. Marys Hospital Guild of Long Beach, Assistance League of Long Beach, Peninsula Racing Association at Bay Meadows Race Track, and the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association; and WHEREAS, in 1980, Millie was the recipient of the 3rd Annual Colonel Barney Oldfield Humanitarian of the Year Award presented by the American Research & Medical Services, Inc. (ARMS Foundation); and WHEREAS, the Orange County Sportswriters Association has announced that on February 21, 1983, Mildred Vessels will be the 3rd recipient of the Orange County Sports Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement Award, joining California Angels owner, Gene Autry, and Los Angeles Dodger Manager, Tom Lasorda, in being honored with this prestigious award. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Cypress City Council hereby commends MRS. MILDRED VESSELS on receiving the ORANGE COUNTY SPORTS HALL OF FAME LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD and extends sincere Congratulations for this outstanding achievement.
