Minutes 2001-07-11MINUTES OF AN ADJOURNED REGULAR MEETING OF THE CYPRESS CITY COUNCIL HELD July 11, 2001 The adjourned regular meeting of the Cypress City Council and Senior Citizens Commission was called to order at 5:38 p.m. by Mayor McGill in the Board Room, West Wing of City Hall, 5275 Orange Avenue, Cypress, California. PRESENT: Council Members Keenan, McCoy, Piercy, Mayor Pro Tem Sondhi, Mayor McGill Commissioners Carruthers, Fifield, Mclver, Narain, White, Hooven, and Chair Christopher ABSENT: None Aisc present were City Manager, Interim Recreation and Parks Director, Recreation Services Manager, Recreation Supervisor, and City Clerk. Commissioner Mclver stated the Commission has worked on the issue of senior transportation for the past year. They have met with other cities to discuss how their programs are run, and a transportation survey was prepared and distributed to senior organizations throughout the City. A total of 385 surveys were distributed with 200 being returned. A need to expand the program was expressed, as the current program is limited to disabled seniors, taking them to and from the Senior Center. The Commission also recommends use of the taxi voucher program. Chairperson Christopher stated the Commission has looked into adult day care to provide assistance without having to place someone in a full-time care facility. Residents were interviewed and adult day care facilities were visited by the Commission. Commissioner Narain stated an adult day care facility on Ball Road is scheduled to open in Cypress early next year. It will serve Cypress and other surrounding communities. Commissioner Fifield stated a critical need county-wide for seniors is affordable housing. Two public forums were held this year that included business leaders, government representatives, and individuals, all focused on providing affordable housing. Assistance from the Council was requested by the Commission. Commissioner White thanked the Council for the appropriation of funds for the marquee at the Senior Center and stated it will be very helpful in providing information on City events. Chairperson Christopher asked for clarification on the reappointment of commissioners. Mayor McGill stated that Council and staff are reviewing several ideas for the reappointment process. Staff will be bringing these ideas before the City Council for consideration in the near future. Commissioner Hooven thanked the Council for their input and asked if there were any other issues they would like the Commission to work on. Mayor McGill stated the Commission has a full agenda currently and the Council does not want to add to that workload. CITY COUNCIL MINUTES JULY 11, 2001 Commissioner Carruthers provided the Council with a copy of the O. C. Register newspaper article on city senior nutrition programs and how much cities pay annually. Mayor McGill thanked the Commissioners for all of their hard work and for serving as advisors to the City Council.
