Happy Friday Team Cypress,
Please join me in congratulating our new Mayor, Paulo Morales, and Mayor Pro Tem, Anne Hertz, on
being selected by the City Council to these visible roles. Many of you know Paulo is a retired Cypress
city employee (Police Officer) and he is serving as Mayor for the second time. Anne is about to start
her second year on the City Council and serving as Mayor “for the time being,” (which is, oddly, what
pro tem translates to from Latin) for the first time.
The City Council has one more meeting this year (12/27), when it will meet to discuss the schedule,
format and content for the community forums we’re planning on the California Voting Rights Act
challenge we received in September. You may recall that challenge involves an attorney asserting
Cypress’ at-large format for electing Council Members is racially polarized. Those of you who have
been around for a while know that since 2000, Cypress has elected an African American, two Asian
Americans and two Hispanics to the City Council. This history of inclusion and diversity is something
the community should be proud of, unfortunately it may not provide much protection from a very
one-sided law.
Don’t forget to follow-up on Regina’s email (from Wednesday) about deferred compensation. The
city offers excellent 457 plan options and these saving plans are a tremendous way to supplement
your CalPERS account. This is especially true for those of you who are younger in your career –
contribute as much as you can and let that money work for you over the next 20+ years.
If you’ve been looking to check out the Ram’s and Charger’s new stadium (SoFi) but didn’t want to
spend an arm and both legs, this weekend offers a very affordable way in. Oregon State and Utah
State are playing a college football game at SoFi on Saturday at 4:30 (the LA Bowl). I’ve seen tickets a
low as $25. The next day, the Rams play the Seahawks and tickets on Stubhub start at $100.
