Don’t make him get a crappy job at minimum wage and then volunteer for you on top of that. He deserves better, and you deserve a paid intern. What if you had your wealthy supporters raise money for an intern for the summer, so you can offer him a salary (hopefully FT, but at least 20 hours/week)? I have no idea if that’s legit, but common sense says it must be, so I suggest you email Fred and ask him whether it would violate any laws for you to have your supporters donate funding for a paid summer intern. You should also ask if you would be required to offer benefits (I have no clue), or if you could pay Jonathan as an independent contractor and just add 30% to his hourly fee to compensate him in cash (which would doubtless be more valuable to him since I’m sure he’s already covered under his school’s health insurance program, for example). You should do this now, because students have summer jobs lined up by March. If you hire Jonathan for 10 weeks at 40 hours per week at $20/hour, you’d need to raise $8K, which is peanuts for wealthy people. You’d get a FT staff person who’s smart, savvy, and has wheels and can help you right when you’ll be needing help to endorse two candidates and help them learn how to run for office. You should definitely have Jonathan attend the zoom training you will offer women democrats who want to run for office in Cypress, once you get your consultant to agree on a time and date for it. If he’s going to help, he should understand what’s needed to run for office. If we’re lucky, you’ll be planting a seed that will flower in a few years once he’s had a chance to get bored with lawyering and decides to run for office! — M
