MINUTES OF A MEETING OF
THE SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION
OF THE CITY OF CYPRESS
August 14, 2024
The regular meeting of the Cypress Senior Citizens Commission was called to order at 3:00 p.m.
on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, in the Cypress Senior Center Conference Room, 9031 Grindlay
Street, Cypress, California.
PRESENT: Commission Chair Heins, Commission Vice Chair Skorupinski,
Commissioners Croce, Fayne, Machal, Nessary, Osman,
ABSENT: None
Also present: Jeff Draper, Director of Recreation and Community Services; lan Kokot, Recreation
Manager; Shayna Gutierrez, Recreation Supervisor; Taylor Burtle, Recreation Coordinator; Alexis
Corral, Recreation Coordinator; Katherine Diaz, Recreation Specialist
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
The pledge was led by Commission Vice Chair Skorupinski.

Annie Sciarra, Certified Senior Advisor for CarePatrol, spoke of the company's services.
NEW BUSINESS
1. Approve Minutes — July 10, 2024
It was moved by Commissioner Machal, and seconded by Commissioner Croce, to approve the
minutes of the meeting of July 10, 2024.
The motion was carried by the following roll call vote:
AYES: 7 COMMISSIONERS: Croce, Fayne, Heins, Machal, Nessary, Osman, and
Skorupinski
NOES: 0 COMMISSIONERS: None
ABSENT: 0 COMMISSIONERS: None
2. Cypress Senior Center Program Summary of Activities, January 1 — June 30, 2024
Staff provided a review of the Cypress Senior Center programs and services for January 1, 2024
through June 30, 2024.
3. Senior Center Facility Use Agreement
The Director provided background and informed that the updated Facility Use Agreement will go
before Council at the September 9 meeting.
Commissioner Osman asked about moonbounces being allowed in the Senior Center.
The Director responded that the verbiage change to the policy is referring to indoor facilities.
It was moved by Commissioner Machal, and seconded by Commissioner Osman, to approve the
updates to the Senior Center Facility Use Agreement.
The motion was carried by the following roll call vote:

STAFF REPORTS (NO ACTION OR DISCUSSION REQUIRED)
Recreation Coordinator Burtle: All About That Pace sign-ups start August 16; Chair volleyball
class starts August 20 and will be held every third Tuesday; Red Cross presentation in September;
North Orange Continuing Education classes starting back this week; looking into presenting a
possible earthquake preparedness forum in the future.
Recreation Coordinator Corral: National Night Out recap, August 6; Last concert Augst 9; Luau
Dining Center Celebration, August 16; Wild Wild West Dining Center Celebration, September 13.
Recreation Specialist Diaz spoke on the senior food programs.
Recreation Supervisor Gutierrez: Celebrate Cypress events; Cypress Run, October 5; Community
Festival, October 12; State of the City, October 15; Women's Conference, October 23.
The Recreation Manager reported that mosquitos infected with West Nile virus have been found on
the border of Cypress and Los Alamitos and of signs bring posted at Lexington and Cedar Glen
Parks, and that the Boys & Girls Club has been notified.
Commission Chair Heins asked if the October meeting will be cancelled.
The Director responded the regular October meeting will be cancelled, but a special meeting can
be held if needed.
OTHER PERTINENT INFORMATION FROM COMMISSION MEMBERS
Commissioner Croce: Sunshine Club meeting; last day of Senior Camp; July birthday Dining
Center event; Senior Center kitchen; volunteered with Police Department at National Night Out.
Spoke of senior club members concerned about the Senior Center being a voting center.
Recreation Supervisor Gutierrez informed that per the City Clerk the Senior Center will not be a
voting site this November.
Commissioner Fayne introduced herself and spoke of looking forward to doing more with the
Commission.

Commissioner Machal: Multiple pancake breakfasts for Kiwanis Club. Appointed to the board of
the Cypress Chamber of Commerce.
Commissioner Nessary: Concerts; National Night Out; Sunshine Club meeting; bingo with the
Senior Citizens Club; line dancing; painting class. Will be volunteering at the Luau Celebration
dining event. Spoke of some people smoking near the area under the Council Chambers during
the line dancing class. Asked if she is allowed to give out her personal contact information in the
capacity of commissioner.
The Director responded that she can provide whatever contact information she is comfortable with
providing, but to make staff aware whenever giving out any information to the public.
Commissioner Osman: National Night Out; concerts; chair yoga. Reported the Woman's Club of
Cypress received a "Non -Profit of Distinction" award from Congresswoman Michelle Steel.
Informed that the Woman's Club will be donating $2050.00 to sponsor All About That Pace run
registrations.
Commissioner Osman left the meeting at 4:00 p.m.
Commission Vice Chair Skorupinski: Senior Citizens Club meeting; National Night Out; concerts;
"Games for Brains;" cribbage. Has registered for the chair volleyball.
Commission Chair Heins: Teaching "Games for Brains;" Alzheimer's caregiver support group;
attended last concert; National Night Out.
ADJOURNMENT
Commission Chair Heins adjourned the meeting of August 14, 2024, at 4:14 p.m. to the regular
meeting of September 11, 2024, to be held in the Senior Center Conference Room at 3:00 p.m.
