09-11-2024 MinutesRECREATION MINUTES OF A MEETING OF THE SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF CYPRESS September 11, 2024 The regular meeting of the Cypress Senior Citizens Commission was called to order at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, in the Cypress Senior Center Conference Room, 9031 Grindlay Street, Cypress, California. PRESENT: Commission Chair Heins, Commission Vice Chair Skorupinski, Commissioners Croce, Machal, Nessary, Osman ABSENT: Commissioner Fayne Also present: Jeff Draper, Director of Recreation and Community Services; lan Kokot, Recreation Manager; Taylor Burtle, Recreation Coordinator; Alexis Corral, Recreation Coordinator PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE The pledge was led by Commissioner Croce. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS (Limited to 30 minutes — three minutes per speaker, unless extended by the Commission) David Rose spoke of a presentation he is preparing on senior self-protection and safety. NEW BUSINESS 1. Approve Minutes — August 14, 2024 It was moved by Commissioner Machal, and seconded by Commissioner Osman, to approve the minutes of the meeting of August 14, 2024. The motion was carried by the following roll call vote: AYES: 6 COMMISSIONERS: Croce, Heins, Machal, Nessary, Osman, and Skorupinski NOES: 0 COMMISSIONERS: None ABSENT: 1 COMMISSIONERS: Fayne 2. Senior Citizens Commission Goals for Fiscal Year 2024-2025 The Director provided background and stated the limiting factor for goals needing additional resources will be funding as the budget for Fiscal Year 2024-2025 has already been approved. Following discussion, it was moved by Commissioner Nessary, and seconded by Commissioner Osman, to accept four goals for Fiscal Year 2024-2025: 1) Registration and refund policies; 2) Senior Center memberships; 3) Attracting younger seniors to the Senior Center; 4) Assisting with the rebranding of the Senior Center on an as needed basis. The motion was carried by the following roll call vote: AYES: 6 COMMISSIONERS: Croce, Heins, Machal, Nessary, Osman, and Skorupinski NOES: 0 COMMISSIONERS: None ABSENT: 1 COMMISSIONERS: Fayne Commission Chair Heins asked about forming ad hoc committees. The Director recommended creating an ad hoc committee for the memberships first. 3. Senior Center Marquee Recreation Manager Kokot provided background on the history and current condition of the Senior Center marquee and asked the Commission to consider removal of the structure. It was moved by Commissioner Croce, and seconded by Commissioner Machal, to remove the Senior Center marquee. The motion was carried by the following roll call vote: AYES: 6 COMMISSIONERS: Croce, Heins, Machal, Nessary, Osman, and Skorupinski NOES: 0 COMMISSIONERS: None ABSENT: 1 COMMISSIONERS: Fayne Commissioner Croce suggested replacing the marquee with a monument sign. The Director informed that staff will be looking at doing a monument sign. It was moved by Commissioner Machal, and seconded by Commissioner Osman, to explore replacing the current marquee with a monument sign. Recreation Coordinator Corral: Luau Dining Center Celebration, August 16; Wild, Wild West Dining Center Celebration, September 13; Halloween Dining Center Celebration, October 31; over 120 people served during the September 11 commodities. Distributed sign up sheet for dining center events for September and October. Announced she has accepted a position with the City of Duarte. 2 The Recreation Manager: State of the City, October 15. Informed Commissioners they will be receiving a reminder for the event. The Director: Announced the Arnold Cypress Park tour, September 30, indicated RSVPs will be sent to Commissioners when a time has been finalized, and that the tour may need to be agendized depending on how many Commissioners will be attending. Commissioner Machal: Preparing for the Cypress Community Festival for Chamber of Commerce and Kiwanis. Commissioner Nessary: Luau Dining Center Celebration; Senior Citizens Club Monday Night Bingo; Sunshine Club meeting; Painting for Older Adults; "Games for Brains." Praised staff working the dining center events. Commissioner Osman: Chair Yoga and Chair Volleyball classes; Chamber of Commerce meeting; September 9 Council meeting; delivering kindness bags for home delivered meal participants; town hall meeting hosted by State Sen. Janet Nguyen. Presented check from the Woman's Club of Cypress for $2,050 for sponsorship of All About That Pace. Commission Vice Chair Skorupinski: Luau Dining Center Celebration; chair volleyball; Chamber of Commerce meeting; September 9 Council meeting; home delivered meals; Senior Citizens Club meeting; "Games for Brains," cribbage. Commission Chair Heins: Teaching "Games for Brains." Congratulated Commissioner Osman for receiving the 2024 Senior of Distinction from Orange County Supervisor Michelle Steel.
