01-08-2025 MinutesRECREATION MINUTES OF A MEETING OF THE SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF CYPRESS January 8, 2025 The regular meeting of the Cypress Senior Citizens Commission was called to order at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, in the Cypress Senior Center Conference Room, 9031 Grindlay Street, Cypress, California. PRESENT: ABSENT: Commission Chair Heins, Commission Vice Chair Skorupinski, Commissioners Fayne, Machal, Nessary, Osman Commissioner Croce Also present: Jeff Draper, Director of Recreation and Community Services; lan Kokot, Recreation Manager; Shayna Gutierrez, Recreation Supervisor; Andi Terry, Recreation Coordinator PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE The pledge was led by Commissioner Nessary. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS (Limited to 30 minutes — three minutes per speaker, unless extended by the Commission) None. NEW BUSINESS 1. Approve Minutes — November 13, 2024 It was moved by Commissioner Machal, and seconded by Commissioner Nessary, to approve the minutes of the meeting of November 13, 2024. The motion was carried by the following roll call vote: AYES: 6 COMMISSIONERS: NOES: 0 COMMISSIONERS: ABSENT: 1 COMMISSIONERS: Fayne, Heins, Machal, Nessary, Osman, and Skorupinski None Croce 2. 2025 Senior Citizens Commission Meeting Schedule The Director recommended cancelling the October 8 meeting and spoke of the dates in red for the joint Council meeting being tentative. Commission Chair Heins asked if the December meeting can be cancelled. The Director responded that staff would not be opposed if the Commission chooses to cancel the December meeting. It was moved by Commissioner Machal, and seconded by Commission Vice Chair Skorupinski, to approve the 2025 Commission meeting calendar with the recommended cancelled dates. The motion was carried by the following roll call vote: AYES: 6 COMMISSIONERS: Fayne, Heins, Machal, Nessary, Osman, and Skorupinski NOES: 0 COMMISSIONERS: None ABSENT: 1 COMMISSIONERS: Croce 3. Fiscal Year 2025-2026 Budget Update The Director provided a report on this item. The Commission asked questions of staff. No action was taken. STAFF REPORTS (NO ACTION OR DISCUSSION REQUIRED) Supervisor Gutierrez introduced Recreation Coordinator Terry and informed she will be overseeing the nutrition program. Recreation Coordinator Terry: Ugly Sweater Party, December 13; New Year's Toast lunch program, January 2; Birthday Lunch, January 27; Cupid's Cafe Lunch, February 12. Reported Home Depot donated decorations in December and that staff will be working with the company on a quarterly basis. Senior Center kitchen passed inspection. Supervisor Gutierrez: Boogie Nights Senior Dance, February 14. Requested Commissioners distribute Grace Lachina nomination forms at the senior clubs' evenings meetings, and during volunteer -led classes. Commission Chair Heins suggested distributing Grace Lachina nomination forms during this month's Commission Meet & Greet. Recreation Manager: Staff has met with Public Works about re -painting lines and installing new lighting in Senior Center parking lot. Reported on concrete being smoothed down in parking lot. SENIOR COMMISSION MEMBER REPORTS FROM COMMISSION -AFFILIATED BOARDS, COMMITTEES, SENIOR PROGRAMS/ACTIVITIES, AND REMARKS Commissioner Fayne: No report. Commissioner Machal: Kiwanis served 700 hot dogs at Holiday Sing; his company donated candy canes tor the event. Commissioner Nessary: Games for Brains; Thanksgiving Celebration; Holiday Sing; Volunteer Holiday Party; Sunshine Club board meetings; Council meetings. Met with Capt. Ausmus on future presentations for seniors. Indicated she would be taking over from Commissioner Croce as the Sunshine Club liaison. Thanked staff for addressing the uneven concrete in the Senior Center parking lot. 2 Commissioner Osman: Chair Volleyball; Volunteer Holiday Party; Holiday Sing. Delivered 38 kindness bags for Meals -on -Wheels. Met with Capt. Ausmus on future presentations for seniors. Commission Vice Chair Skorupinski: Games for Brains; cribbage; Council meetings. Delivered kindness bags for Meals -on -Wheels. Commission Chair Heins: Taught Games for Brains; Alzheimer's Caregiver Support; Red Cross presentation; Volunteer Holiday Party; Ugly Sweater Dining Center event. Met with ad hoc committee on Senior Center membership.
