MINUTES OF A MEETING OF THE CYPRESS
RECREATION & COMMUNITY SERVICES COMMISSION
January 21, 2025
The regular meeting of the Cypress Recreation & Community Services Commission was called to order at
6:01 p.m. on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, in the Cypress Community Center Garden Room.
PRESENT: Commission Chair Dronkers, Commission Vice Chair Edwards, Commissioners
Cervantes, Erbe, Jackson, Logovii and Ridgeway.
ABSENT: None
Also present, Jeff Draper, Director of Recreation & Community Services; lan Kokot, Recreation Manager
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
The pledge of the flag was led by Commission Vice Chair Edwards.
ORAL COMMUNICATIONS (Limited to 30 minutes — three minutes per speaker, unless extended by the
Commission)
Council Member Kyle Chang praised the Recreation & Community Services Department for their services
and recommended more programs that promote healthier lifestyles.
Teddy Lloyd, Cerritos resident, spoke on the pickleball courts at Arnold Cypress Park.
NEW BUSINESS
1. Approve Minutes — Meeting of December 17, 2024
It was moved by Commission Vice Chair Edwards, and seconded by Commissioner Jackson, to approve
the minutes of the December 17, 2024, meeting.
Motion was carried by the following roll call vote:
AYES: 7 COMMISSIONERS: Cervantes, Dronkers, Edwards, Erbe, Jackson, Logovii, Ridgeway
NOES: 0 COMMISSIONERS: None
ABSENT: 0 COMMISSIONERS: None
2. 2025 Recreation & Community Services Commission Meeting Schedule
The Director recommended cancelling the October 21 meeting due to Celebrate Cypress events, and
spoke of potential dates for the joint meeting with City Council.
The Director informed that the Commission can call for a special meeting in October for the Halloween
Decorating Contest and a special meeting in December for the Holiday Decorating Contest, should they
be needed.
It was moved by Commissioner Ridgeway, and seconded by Commissioner Erbe, to approve the 2025
Commission meeting calendar as presented.
Motion was carried by the following roll call vote:

3. Fiscal Year 2025-2026 Budget Update
The Director provided a report on this item.
The Commission asked questions of staff.
No action was taken.
4. Consideration of Proposed Statue/Sculpture Donation from Friends of Cypress Cultural Arts
The Director provided background, reviewed the Art in Public Places policy, and asked the Commissioners
to provide a recommendation on the two donated art pieces and the placement locations.
The Commission asked questions of staff.
It was moved by Commissioner Erbe, and seconded by Commissioner Ridgeway, to accept the donation of
"Young Ensemble" and "Picasso's Little Picasso" from Friends of Cypress Cultural Arts and to accept the
placement locations at the Civic Center Green.

Commission Chair Dronkers recognized Youth Action Committee members Devi Nishadevi Ajith, Yuri Jung,
Velika Lee, and Aryav Sheth
STAFF REPORTS AND DISCUSSION:
Arnold Cypress Park Update
The Recreation Manager: Installation of synthetic turf and playgrounds; painting of stripes on basketball
and pickleball courts.
OTHER PERTINENT INFORMATION FROM COMMISSION MEMBERS:
Commissioner Cervantes: suggested putting holiday trash pick-up and street sweeping schedules in "The
Progress"; related that the City of Garden Grove promotes a memorial service package for two of their
facilities and recommended Cypress Recreation do something similar for its facilities; spoke of having board
games for the participants at the Kids Night Out events.
Commissioner Erbe: related how much the recipient of the Gingerbread award for the Holiday Decorating
Contest enjoyed her yard sign.

Commissioner Jackson: agreed that there should be more communication for residents on holiday trash
pickup schedules; related how glad her recipient was to receive a yard sign for the Holiday Decorating
Contest.
Commissioner Logovii: no report
Commissioner Ridgeway: no report
Commission Vice Chair Edwards: thanked the Friends of Cypress Cultural Arts volunteers for attending the
meeting and for the donation of the art pieces.
Commission Chair Dronkers: enjoyed delivering the Holiday Decorating yard signs.
ADJOURNMENT:
Commission Chair Dronkers adjourned the meeting of January 21, 2025, at 7:07 p.m. to the regular meeting
of February 18, 2025, to be held in the Cypress Community Center Conference Room at 6:00 p.m.
