02-12-2025 MinutesMINUTES OF A MEETING OF THE SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF CYPRESS February 12, 2025 The regular meeting of the Cypress Senior Citizens Commission was called to order at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, in the Cypress Senior Center Conference Room, 9031 Grindlay Street, Cypress, California. PRESENT: Commission Chair Heins, Commission Vice Chair Skorupinski, Commissioners Croce, Fayne, Machal, Nessary, Osman ABSENT: None Also present: Jeff Draper, Director of Recreation and Community Services; Ian Kokot, Recreation Manager; Shayna Gutierrez, Recreation Supervisor; Taylor Burtle, Recreation Coordinator; Andi Terry, Recreation Coordinator; Katherine Diaz, Recreation Specialist INTRODUCTION OF MAYOR PRO TEM LEO MEDRANO AND COUNCIL MEMBER KYLE CHANG Council Member Chang provided background on himself, and asked if Council can receive feedback from Commission meetings. Mayor Pro Tem Medrano provided background on himself, and distributed invitations to the Americana Awards honoring former Cypress Mayor Rob Johnson. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE The pledge was led by Commissioner Fayne. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS (Limited to 30 minutes – three minutes per speaker, unless extended by the Commission) None. NEW BUSINESS 1. Approve Minutes – January 8, 2025 It was moved by Commissioner Machal, and seconded by Commissioner Nessary, to approve the minutes of the meeting of January 8, 2025. The motion was carried by the following roll call vote: AYES: 7 COMMISSIONERS: Croce, Fayne, Heins, Machal, Nessary, Osman, Skorupinski NOES: 0 COMMISSIONERS: None ABSENT: 0 COMMISSIONERS: None 2 2. Safety Education and Fraud Prevention Program The Director provided a report on Seniors Alert, Independent and Living Safely (S.A.I.L.S). Community Outreach Officer Julie Marquez displayed a Powerpoint presentation on S.A.I.L.S. The Senior Commissioners asked questions. It was moved by Commissioner Nessary, and seconded by Commissioner Fayne, to present S.A.I.L.S as a program at the Senior Center. The motion was carried by the following roll call vote: AYES: 7 COMMISSIONERS: Croce, Fayne, Heins, Machal, Nessary, Osman, Skorupinski NOES: 0 COMMISSIONERS: None ABSENT: 0 COMMISSIONERS: None 3. Program Summary, July 1 – December 31, 2024 Staff provided a review of the Cypress Senior Center programs and services for July 1, 2024, through December 31, 2024. No action was taken. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS (Limited to 30 minutes – three minutes per speaker, unless extended by the Commission) None. STAFF REPORTS (NO ACTION OR DISCUSSION REQUIRED) Recreation and Community Services Coordinator Terry: Grocery program; Cupid’s Café dining center event, February 12; reported on Cypress Mayor David Burke’s February 12 meet and greet at the Senior Center. Supervisor Gutierrez: Have received 10 applications for the Grace Lachina Senior Recognition Awards and will schedule a meeting with the award ad hoc committee. Recreation Manager Kokot: Senior Center parking lot lines to be repainted March 3 -7; staff has met with Public Works about parking lot lighting; 19 Non-Profit Grant Request applications received and those will go before City Council in March. SENIOR COMMISSION MEMBER REPORTS FROM COMMISSION-AFFILIATED BOARDS, COMMITTEES, SENIOR PROGRAMS/ACTIVITIES, AND REMARKS Commissioner Croce: February Youth Action Committee meeting. Commissioner Fayne: Spoke of wanting to take more Senior Center programs in retirement. Commissioner Machal: Attended two yoga classes to speak on the Grace Lachina Award applications. 3 Commissioner Nessary: Games for Brains; Tai Chi; Volunteer Holiday Party; Senior Citizens Club and Sunshine Club board meetings and bingo; Council meetings; day trip through the Senior Citizens Club. Presented information on the Grace Lachina Awards to both senior clubs. Commissioner Osman: Council meetings; volunteered at the Cupid’s Café dining center event; ad hoc committee meeting on Senior Center membership. Praised staff for the Cupid’s Café lunch program. Commission Vice Chair Skorupinski: Games for Brains; cribbage; Council meetings; chair volleyball; Senior Citizens Club board meetings. Commission Chair Heins: Taught Games for Brains; Alzheimer’s Caregiver Support; January Youth Action Committee meeting, Senior Center Meet & Greet; ad hoc committee meetings on Senior Center membership; CPR hands-on class. Spoke about the Grace Lachina Awards at a dining center lunch.
