The regular meeting of the Cypress Senior Citizens Commission was called to order at 3:00 p.m.
on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, in the Cypress Senior Center Conference Room, 9031 Grindlay
Street, Cypress, California.
PRESENT: Commission Chair Heins, Commission Vice Chair Skorupinski,
Commissioners Croce, Fayne, Machal, Nessary, Osman
ABSENT: None
Also present: Jeff Draper, Director of Recreation and Community Services; Ian Kokot, Recreation
Manager; Shayna Gutierrez, Recreation Supervisor; Taylor Burtle, Recreation Coordinator
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
The pledge was led by Commissioner Osman.

NEW BUSINESS
1. Approve Minutes—February 12, 2025
It was moved by Commissioner Croce, and seconded by Commissioner Osman, to approve the
minutes of the meeting of February 12, 2025.
The motion was carried by the following roll call vote:
AYES: 7 COMMISSIONERS: Croce, Fayne, Heins, Machal, Nessary, Osman, Skorupinski
NOES: 0 COMMISSIONERS: None
ABSENT: 0 COMMISSIONERS: None
2. Selection of Recipient for the Annual Grace Lachina Outstanding Senior Recognition
Award
Recreation Supervisor Gutierrez informed that 20 entries were received; that the ad hoc
subcommittee met last week to decide on an award recipient; and distributed invitations to the
Volunteer Recognition on April 25.
Commissioner Machal announced that Jane Ting was selected by the ad hoc subcommittee to
receive the Grace Lachina Outstanding Senior Recognition Award.
It was moved by Commissioner Machal, and seconded by Commissioner Croce, to present the
Grace Lachina Outstanding Senior Recognition Award to Jane Ting at the Volunteer Recognition
on April 25.
The motion was carried by the following roll call vote:

3. Senior Center Membership
Recreation Manager Kokot provided background.
Commission Chair Heins provided a report from the ad hoc subcommittee to explore Senior Center
memberships.
Discussion ensued between staff and Commissioners.
No action was taken.

STAFF REPORTS (NO ACTION OR DISCUSSION REQUIRED)
Recreation Supervisor Gutierrez: Senior Center parking lot lines painted; speaking with Public
Works about the parking lot lighting; reminded to RSVP for the Volunteer Recognition Celebration;
west entry planter will be receiving a makeover by volunteers from the Home Depot Foundation.
Recreation Coordinator Burtle: Spring CAMP registration opened this week and is almost full;
applications to go out for Resource Fair, June 20. Reported on the success of the Boogie Nights
60s Dance, February 14.
Recreation Manager Kokot: Non-Profit Grant Request applications to go before City Council in
April.
The Director: Form 700 due to City Clerk by April 1; Commissioner Appreciation Reception April 24
at the Community Center.
SENIOR COMMISSION MEMBER REPORTS FROM COMMISSION-AFFILIATED BOARDS,
COMMITTEES, SENIOR PROGRAMS/ACTIVITIES, AND REMARKS
Commissioner Croce: Attending chair yoga classes. Reported trying to register for NOCE classes,
but all full.
Commissioner Fayne: Spoke of a request she made to the school her grandchildren attend that
Black History Month be included in the school's February monthly observances.
Commissioner Machal: Attending yoga classes, Grace Lachina ad hoc committee.
Commissioner Nessary: Games for Brains; Grace Lachina Award ad hoc subcommittee; Senior
and Sunshine Clubs bingo and board meetings; senior club excursion. Attended a birthday
celebration lunch and praised staff for an enjoyable event.

Commissioner Osman: YAC meeting; City Council meetings. Announced Commissioner
Skorupinski received the Eddy Award from the Orange County Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs.
Commission Vice Chair Skorupinski: Senior Club board meeting; Grace Lachina ad hoc
subcommittee; cribbage; chair volleyball; Games for Brains; City Council meetings.
Commission Chair Heins: Boogie Nights 60s Dance; taught Games for Brains; Alzheimer support
group.
ADJOURNMENT
Commission Chair Heins adjourned the meeting of March 12, 2025, at 4:04 p.m. to the regular
meeting of April 9, 2025, to be held in the Senior Center Conference Room at 3:00 p.m.
