HomeMy WebLinkAbout06-11-2025 Minutes MINUTES OF A MEETING OF 111 THE SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF CYPRESS June 11, 2025 The regular meeting of the Cypress Senior Citizens Commission was called to order at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, in the Cypress Senior Center Conference Room, 9031 Grindley Street, Cypress, California. PRESENT: Commission Chair Heins, Commission Vice Chair Skorupinski, Commissioners Croce, Machal, Nessary, Osman ABSENT: Commissioner Fayne Also present: Jeff Draper, Director of Recreation and Community Services; Ian Kokot, Recreation Manager; Shayna Gutierrez, Recreation Supervisor; Taylor Burtle, Recreation Coordinator PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE The pledge was led by Commissioner Machal. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS (Limited to 30 minutes — three minutes per speaker, unless extended by the Commission) None. NEW BUSINESS 1. Approve Minutes— May 14, 2025 It was moved by Commissioner Machal, and seconded by Commissioner Nessary, to approve the minutes of the meeting of May 14, 2025. The motion was carried by the following roll call vote: AYES: 7 COMMISSIONERS: Croce, Heins, Machal, Nessary, Osman, Skorupinski NOES: 0 COMMISSIONERS: None ABSENT: 1 COMMISSIONERS: Fayne STAFF REPORTS (NO ACTION OR DISCUSSION REQUIRED? SAILS Program Supervisor Gutierrez reported on the first meeting of the program, which had 25 participants; that staff received positive feedback from participants; and reviewing if there is a need to continue the program on a quarterly basis. Volunteers Needed for June 20 Community Resource Fair Recreation Coordinator Burtle distributed a volunteer sign-up sheet. Supervisor Gutierrez urged the commissioners to volunteer; thanked Commissioner Machal and the Kiwanis Club for providing the pancake breakfast; spoke of Home Depot giving away plants at the Resource Fair. Joint Meeting with City Council and Senior Commissioners —Auaust 25 The Director announced a joint meeting with City Council on August 25 and of Commissioners having more direct communication with Council. Outgoing Commissioners The Director thanked Commission Chair Heins and Commissioner Croce for their service and presented Commissioner Chair Heins with a gavel. The Director presented a list of accomplishments of the current commission. Supervisor Gutierrez: Concerts on the Green starts Friday, June 13. Recreation Coordinator Burtle: NOCE summer classes started last week. SENIOR COMMISSION MEMBER REPORTS FROM COMMISSION-AFFILIATED BOARDS, COMMITTEES, SENIOR PROGRAMS/ACTIVITIES. AND REMARKS Commissioner Croce: Interview with Council for second term on commission; NOCE exercise class for older adults; chair yoga; City Council meetings. Commissioner Machal: No report. Commission Nessary: Police Department Open House; Senior Club bingo; Sunshine Club board meeting; birthday lunches; senior club bus trip; Cypress Police Special Olympics Torch Run. Commissioner Osman: Police Department Open House; chair volleyball; Memorial Day Celebration at Forest Lawn; Chamber of Commerce breakfast meeting. Spoke of the reduced participants for Meals on Wheels affecting the number of kindness bags being distributed. Commission Vice Chair Skorupinski: Police Department Open House; Memorial Day Celebration at Forest Lawn; Chamber of Commerce breakfast meeting; Games for Brains; cribbage. Commission Chair Heins: Taught Games for Brains. Asked if the deployment of Recreation Specialist Katherine Diaz for the National Guard will affect the Senior Center. Supervisor Gutierrez responded that the senior meal program will proceed normally ADJOURNMENT Commission Chair Heins adjourned the meeting of June 11, 2025, at 3:28 p.m. to the regular meeting of July 9, 2025, to be held in the Senior Center Conference Room at 3:00 p.m. SECRETARY TO THE SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION 2
