RECREATION & COMMUNITY SERVICES COMMISSION

The regular meeting of the Cypress Recreation & Community Services Commission was called to order at
6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, in the Cypress Community Center Ballroom A.
PRESENT: Commission Chair Dronkers, Commission Vice Chair Edwards, Commissioners
Cervantes, Jackson, Logovii, and Ridgeway
ABSENT: Commissioner Erbe
Also present, Jeff Draper, Director of Recreation & Community Services; Ian Kokot, Recreation Manager
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
The pledge of the flag was led by Commission Vice Chair Edwards.
ORAL COMMUNICATIONS (Limited to 30 minutes — three minutes per speaker, unless extended by the
Commission)
Teddy Lloyd, Cerritos resident, spoke on the Arnold Cypress Park pickleball courts.
NEW BUSINESS
1. Approve Minutes —Meeting of May 20, 2025
It was moved by Commissioner Ridgeway, and seconded by Commissioner Logovii,to approve the minutes
of the May 20, 2025, meeting.
Motion was carried by the following roll call vote:
AYES: 6 COMMISSIONERS: Cervantes, Dronkers, Edwards, Jackson, Logovii, and Ridgeway
NOES: 0 COMMISSIONERS: None
ABSENT: 1 COMMISSIONERS: Erbe
2. Park Amenities
The Director provided background on the City Council ad hoc subcommittee created to review and
potentially make recommendations regarding park playground equipment and playground equipment shade
structures.
Commission Chair Dronkers presented the survey results submitted by the Commissioners on Cypress
parks playgrounds, shade, and amenities.
Discussion ensued among the Commissioners.
It was moved by Commission Vice Chair Edwards, and seconded by Commissioner Jackson, to provide a
three-tier recommendation to Council for playground equipment replacement, shade structure, and
enhanced playground amenities, mirroring shade structures for those parks at which the Commission is
recommending replacement of playground equipment.
STAFF REPORTS AND DISCUSSION:
The Director: distributed the latest edition of The Progress; reminded of the July 14 joint meeting between
Council and the Recreation Commission; distributed Salute to America parking passes and wristbands;
informed Commissioner Logovii is up for a second term and thanked Commissioner Ridgeway for her
service to the Commission.
The Director thanked the Commissioners for their accomplishments over the last four years: survey for
Concerts on the Green; the implementation of the Halloween Decorating Contest; the annual Holiday
Decorating Contest; five year Strategic Plan; reviewed and made recommendations for revisions to the
Community and Senior Centers' fields and facility use policies and registration and refund policies; park
rules and regulations; sponsorships; naming of the Arnold Cypress Park's softball fields;joint meetings with
City Council.
OTHER PERTINENT INFORMATION FROM COMMISSION MEMBERS:
Commissioner Cervantes: spoke of registering his son for a class that was cancelled due to low enrollment
and asked how the registration has been for the summer programs.
The Director informed that day camp and parks programs are doing well and that staff may be reviewing
the number of summer classes that will be offered next summer.
Commissioner Jackson: commented on the fence around the natural field at Lexington Park. Spoke of how
well the parks look. Praised the Recreation staff and the summer programs. Thanked Commission Chair
Dronkers for tabulating all of the data from the Commissioners.
Commissioner Logovii: praised the Arnold Cypress Park volleyball courts. Spoke of enjoying her time on
the Commission.
Commissioner Ridgeway: attended the first Concert on the Green; spoke on the pickleball courts at Arnold
Cypress. Spoke of how much she enjoyed serving on the Commission.
Commission Vice Chair Edwards: Looking forward to Salute at Cypress College. Enjoyed visiting the parks
for the assessment.
Commission Chair Dronkers: thanked Commission Ridgeway for her assistance when he first started on
the Commission.
ADJOURNMENT:
Commission Chair Dronkers adjourned the meeting of June 17, 2025, at 7:10 p.m. to the regular meeting
of July 15, 2025, to be held in the Cypress Community Center Conference Room at 6:00 p.m.
