HomeMy WebLinkAbout07-09-2025 Minutes G+.pRss MINUTES OF A MEETING OF THE SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION RECREATION OF THE CITY OF CYPRESS July 9, 2025 The regular meeting of the Cypress Senior Citizens Commission was called to order at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, in the Cypress Senior Center Conference Room, 9031 Grindlay Street, Cypress, California. PRESENT: Commission Vice Chair Skorupinski, Commissioners Button, Croce, Machal, Nessary, Osman, Reames ABSENT: None Also present: Jeff Draper, Director of Recreation and Community Services; Ian Kokot, Recreation Manager; Shayna Gutierrez, Recreation Supervisor; Andi Terry, Recreation Coordinator PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE The pledge was led by Commissioner Machal. PRESENTATION City Clerk Alisha Farnell administered the Oath of Office and presented a Certificate of Appointment to Commissioners Button, Croce, and Reames. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS (Limited to 30 minutes — three minutes per speaker, unless extended by the Commission) None. NEW BUSINESS 1. Approve Minutes—June 11, 2025 It was moved by Commissioner Button, and seconded by Commissioner Machal, to approve the minutes of the meeting of June 11, 2025. The motion was carried by the following roll call vote: AYES: 7 COMMISSIONERS: Button, Croce, Machal, Nessary, Osman, Reames, and Skorupinski NOES: 0 COMMISSIONERS: None ABSENT: 0 COMMISSIONERS: None 2. Reorganization of the Senior Citizens Commission Nominations were opened for Chair and Vice Chair of the Senior Citizens Commission. It was moved by Commissioner Nessary, and seconded by Commissioner Machal, to approve the nomination of Commissioner Skorupinski for Chair. The motion was carried by the following roll call vote: AYES: 7 COMMISSIONERS: Button, Croce, Machal, Nessary, Osman, Reames, and Skorupinski NOES: 0 COMMISSIONERS: None ABSENT: 0 COMMISSIONERS: None It was moved by Commissioner Machal, and seconded by Commissioner Nessary, to approve the nomination of Commissioner Croce for vice chair. The motion was carried by the following roll call vote: AYES: 7 COMMISSIONERS: Button, Croce, Machal, Nessary, Osman, Reames, and Skorupinski NOES: 0 COMMISSIONERS: None ABSENT: 0 COMMISSIONERS: None 3. Senior Commissioners Activities and Committee Assignments Recreation Supervisor Gutierrez provided background on the committee assignments. Commission discussion ensued. It was moved by Commissioner Machal, and seconded by Commissioner Button, to approve the Commission committee assignments as follows: Cypress Senior Center Programs & Events—no specific commissioner assigned; on an as-needed basis Cypress Sunshine Club Liaison—Commissioners Osman and Reames Senior Citizens Club Liaison—Commission Chair Skorupinski and Commissioners Button and Osman Youth Action Committee—Commission Vice Chair Croce primary, other commissioners on a rotating basis Cypress Police Department Liaison—Commission Vice Chair Croce, Commissioners Nessary and Osman Orange County Senior Advisory Council—Commissioners Button and Nessary rotating The motion was carried by the following roll call vote: AYES: 7 COMMISSIONERS: Button, Croce , Machal, Nessary, Osman, Reames, and Skorupinski NOES: 0 COMMISSIONERS: None ABSENT: 0 COMMISSIONERS: None STAFF REPORTS (NO ACTION OR DISCUSSION REQUIRED) Recreation Coordinator Terry: 4th of July dining event, July 3; grocery distribution second Wednesday each month, with today's distribution serving 134 participants; Luau dining center 2 celebration, August 15; Wild Wild West dining center celebration, September 12. Distributed sign-up sheet for Commissioners for upcoming dining center events. Supervisor Gutierrez: Attendance for Community Resource Fair about 300; first SAILS program completed with positive reviews from participants, with staff planning to repeat the program next year. Thanked the Commissioners for attending the Community Resource Fair and Salute to America. Announced staff would present a program summary at the August meeting. The Recreation Manager: Entry/exit Senior Center doors to be replaced later this year with new doors that will swing from inside out per ADA regulations. The Director: Announced the August 25 joint meeting with City Council. SENIOR COMMISSION MEMBER REPORTS FROM COMMISSION-AFFILIATED BOARDS, COMMITTEES, SENIOR PROGRAMS/ACTIVITIES, AND REMARKS Commissioner Button: Resource Fair; Salute to America. Commissioner Machal: Resource Fair; Salute to America; assisted the dining center for Cinco de Mayo luncheon. Reported he will be conducting a gardening segment at next week's Senior C.A.M.P. Commissioner Nessary: Games for Brains; Bingo; Sunshine Club board meeting; Resource Fair; Salute to America; Concerts on the Green. Attended SAILS and reported hearing positive feedback from participants. Will be assisting at the Senior C.A.M.P. next week. Reported hearing from bingo participants about lack of lighting on walkway. Commissioner Osman: Resource Fair; Salute to America; SAILS; chair volleyball. Praised the SAILS program. Asked about the decrease in home delivered meal participants. Supervisor Gutierrez responded that Meals on Wheels assigns the participants for home delivered meals. Commissioner Reames: no report. Commission Vice Chair Croce: Resource Fair; Salute to America; SAILS; Games for Brains; yoga; 4th of July dining event. Praised the Salute to America event. Commission Chair Skorupinski: Resource Fair; Salute to America; SAILS; Chamber of Commerce mixer; chair volleyball; Games for Brains. Welcomed the new Commissioners. Reported on a woman asking the Commissioners if she could start a chess club at the Senior Center. Supervisor Gutierrez responded that she would look into that.
