HomeMy WebLinkAbout08-13-2025 Minutes MINUTES OF A MEETING OF THE SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF CYPRESS August 13, 2025 The regular meeting of the Cypress Senior Citizens Commission was called to order at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, in the Cypress Senior Center Conference Room, 9031 Grindlay Street, Cypress, California. PRESENT: Commission Chair Skorupinski, Commission Vice Chair Croce, Commissioners Button, Machal, Nessary, Osman, Reames ABSENT: None Also present: Jeff Draper, Director of Recreation and Community Services; Ian Kokot, Recreation Manager; Shayna Gutierrez, Recreation Supervisor; Taylor Burtle, Recreation Coordinator; Andi Terry, Recreation Coordinator; Katherine Diaz, Recreation Specialist PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE The pledge was led by Commissioner Osman. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS (Limited to 30 minutes — three minutes per speaker, unless extended by the Commission) None. NEW BUSINESS 1. Approve Minutes—July 9, 2025 Commissioner Nessary pointed out that under Senior Commissioners Activities and Committee Assignments it should be listed as Commissioners Nessary and Reames for Sunshine Club liaisons instead of Commissioners Osman and Reames. It was moved by Commissioner Nessary, and seconded by Commission Vice Chair Croce, to approve the amended minutes of the meeting of July 9, 2025. The motion was carried by the following roll call vote: AYES: 7 COMMISSIONERS: Button, Croce, Machal, Nessary, Osman, Reames, and Skorupinski NOES: 0 COMMISSIONERS: None ABSENT: 0 COMMISSIONERS: None 2. Cypress Senior Center Program Summary of Activities, January 1 —June 30, 2025 Staff provided a review of the Cypress Senior Center programs and services for January 1, 2025, through June 30, 2025. Commissioners asked questions of staff. Receive and file. 3. Senior Center Interior Door Replacement Project Recreation and Community Services Manager Kokot provided an update on the Senior Center interior door replacement project, indicating the doors will not slide, but swing open per ADA regulations, and that the anticipated installation will begin the second week of December 2025 with an estimated three to four week installation time. Commissioners asked questions of staff. Receive and file. STAFF REPORTS (NO ACTION OR DISCUSSION REQUIRED) Report of July and August Activities Recreation Coordinator Terry: Luau lunch, August 15. Confirmed commissioners who will be volunteering for event. Welcomed Recreation Specialist Katherine Diaz back from her National Guard deployment. Recreation Supervisor Gutierrez informed that Senior Center parking may be an issue during the luau luncheon. Recreation Coordinator Burtle: Last Concert on the Green Friday, August 8; Symphony on the Go at Maple Grove North Park Friday, August 15; sign-ups for All About That Pace started Monday, August 11 and that 25 have signed up so far,with five spots left. Youth Action Committee Meeting Assignments Recreation Supervisor Gutierrez distributed the sign-up sheet for the Youth Action Committee meetings. Joint Meeting with City Council—August 25. 2025 Commissioner Osman recommended postponing the joint meeting to a later date due to several issues Council will have on their agenda for the August 25 meeting. Commissioner Machal recommended postponing the joint meeting to a later date. Commission Vice Chair Skorupinski recommended postponing the joint meeting to a later date. The Director responded that he will work with the City Clerk and City Council to reschedule the meeting. The Director: Reminded that the ethics training must be completed by September 5. SENIOR COMMISSION MEMBER REPORTS FROM COMMISSION-AFFILIATED BOARDS, COMMITTEES, SENIOR PROGRAMS/ACTIVITIES, AND REMARKS Commissioner Button: Sunshine Club Board meeting; Orange County Older Adults Advisory Commission meeting; City Council special meeting; Cypress Chamber of Commerce breakfast. 2 Commissioner Machal: Concerts; gardening demonstration for Senior Camp. Reported Kiwanis Club sold food at four concerts and raised $3700, which will go for scholarships. Informed that he will not be at the September 10 meeting. Commissioner Nessary: Volunteered for Senior Camp and birthday lunches; attended National Night Out; Senior Citizen and Sunshine Club bingo; concerts; Games for Brains. Reported hearing praise from many members of the senior clubs about the light installed at the Senior Center walkway. Commissioner Osman: Concerts; National Night Out. Attended a meeting for the Cypress Women's Conference. Commissioner Reames: Sunshine Club board meeting and bingo; concerts; chair volleyball. Reported hearing a conversation in Seal Beach between two people who had attended a Senior Center dance. Commission Vice Chair Croce: Senior Camp; chair volleyball; Senior Center meet and greet; National Night Out; concerts; senior club bingo. Had a meeting with Community Outreach Officer Julie Marquez about S.A.I.L.S. Commission Chair Skorupinski: Concerts; National Night Out; cribbage; Games for Brains.
