THE SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION
OF THE CITY OF CYPRESS
January 14, 2026
The regular meeting of the Cypress Senior Citizens Commission was called to order at 3:00 p.m.
on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, in the Cypress Senior Center Conference Room, 9031 Grindlay
Street, Cypress, California.
PRESENT: Commission Chair Skorupinski, Commission Vice Chair Croce,
Commissioners Button, Machal, Nessary, Osman, Reames
ABSENT: None
Also present: Jeff Draper, Director of Recreation and Community Services; Ian Kokot, Recreation
Manager; Shayna Gutierrez, Recreation Supervisor; Andi Terry, Recreation Coordinator
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
The pledge was led by the Director of Recreation and Community Services.

by the Commission)
None.
NEW BUSINESS
1. Approve Minutes — November 12, 2025
It was moved by Commissioner Machal, and seconded by Commissioner Osman, to approve the
minutes of the meeting of November 12, 2025.
The motion was carried by the following roll call vote:
AYES: 7 COMMISSIONERS: Button, Croce, Machal, Nessary, Osman, Reames, and
Skorupinski
NOES: 0 COMMISSIONERS: None
ABSENT: 0 COMMISSIONERS: None
2. 2026 Senior Citizens Commission Meeting Schedule
The Director informed that staff is recommending two cancellations for the 2026 meeting schedule:
October 14 and November 11.
Commissioner Machal asked if the meeting will be dark in December.
The Director responded it would be up to the Commission if they want to cancel the December
2026 meeting.
It was moved by Commissioner Button, and seconded by Commissioner Nessary, that due to the
cancellation of the regular meeting on November 11 because of the Veterans Day holiday, to meet
instead on Tuesday, November 10 and cancel the December 9, 2026, meeting.
The motion was carried by the following roll call vote:
AYES: 7 COMMISSIONERS: Button, Croce, Machal, Nessary, Osman, Reames, and
Skorupinski
NOES: 0 COMMISSIONERS: None
ABSENT: 0 COMMISSIONERS: None
STAFF REPORTS (NO ACTION OR DISCUSSION REQUIRED)
Entry Door Walking Tour
The Recreation Supervisor: announced completion of entry door project and that staff would be
giving a tour of the doors after the meeting; Phase II of parking lot slurry seal to be completed next
week; nominations for the Grace Lachina award accepted through February 13; thanked the
commissioners who attended the Holiday Volunteer Party.
The Recreation Coordinator: Ugly Sweater Party, December 12, and New Year's Toast, January 5
dining center events. Announced the next dining event celebration will be March 13 and that there
would be a sign-up sheet passed around at the February meeting.
The Director: related that the Senior Center refrigerator and freezer stopped functioning and of
working with the interim City Manager and interim Finance Director to get the funds to purchase new
appliances.
SENIOR COMMISSION MEMBER REPORTS FROM COMMISSION -AFFILIATED BOARDS,
COMMITTEES, SENIOR PROGRAMS/ACTIVITIES, AND REMARKS
Commissioner Button: Volunteered at the Ugly Sweater Party and the Meet and Greet; Sunshine
Club meeting; City Council meetings; January Youth Action Committee meeting.
Commissioner Machal: Kiwanis distributed 850 hot dogs at the Holiday Sing. Distributed flyer
announcing Kiwanis 75th anniversary celebration on February 7 at the Courtyard by Marriott and
that Recreation and Community Services Director Jeff Draper will be recognized at the event.
Commissioner Nessary: Senior clubs Thanksgiving dinner board meetings, and bingo; Birthday
Celebration, Ugly Sweater Party; Flannels and Friends Holiday Party; Senior Club trips; Games for
Brains; Huntington Beach Police presentation on scams; Plus 40s Dance; City Council meeting,
Meet and Greet. Reported hearing many compliments about Senior Center staff. Spoke of seniors
still asking about having karaoke at the Senior Center.
The Recreation Supervisor informed that staff is reviewing that.
Commissioner Osman: Sunshine Club lunch event in November; chair volleyball; Chamber of
Commerce meetings: Woman's Club Block Party; Flannel and Friends Holiday Party; kindness
bags; City Council meetings. Reported on the Woman's Club Adopt A Family program.
Announced the April 11 Woman's Club Tea.
Commissioner Reames: Ugly Sweater Party; Jolly Crafting dining center event; Woman's Club
block party.

Commission Vice Chair Croce: Holiday Sing; Flannel and Friends Holiday Party; assisted at the
Jolly Crafting dining center event; January Youth Action Committee meeting.
Commission Chair Skorupinski: Ugly Sweater Party; chair volleyball; Games for Brains; cribbage;
Sunshine Club lunch event in November; Chamber of Commerce meetings; City Council meetings.
Was elected to the Board of Directors for Championship Baseball. Spoke of patrons still expressing
concerns about the lighting in the Senior Center parking lot.
The Recreation Supervisor reported that staff is in talks with Engineering and Public orks and
that redoing the lighting in the parking lot is part of year's CIP.
The Recreation anager informed that the City is currently accepting bids for the project.

Commission Chair Skorupinski adjourned the meeting of January 14, 2026, at 3:40 p.m. to the
regular meeting of February 11, 2026, to be held in the Senior Center Conference Room at 3:00
p.m.
