THE SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION
OF THE CITY OF CYPRESS
March 11, 2026
The regular meeting of the Cypress Senior Citizens Commission was called to order at 3:00 p.m.
on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, in the Cypress Senior Center Conference Room, 9031 Grindlay
Street, Cypress, California.
PRESENT: Commission Chair Skorupinski, Commission Vice Chair Croce,
Commissioners Button, Machal, Nessary, Osman, Reames
ABSENT: None
Also present: Jeff Draper, Director of Recreation and Community Services; Shayna Gutierrez,
Recreation Supervisor

NEW BUSINESS
1. Approve Minutes — February 11, 2026
It was moved by Commissioner Machal, and seconded by Commissioner Osman, to approve the
minutes of the meeting of February 11, 2026.
The motion was carried by the following roll call vote:.

2. Selection of Recipient for the Annual Grace Lachina Outstanding Senior Recognition
Award
The Recreation Supervisor reported 19 entries had been received and that the ad hoc committee
chose Gincy Heins to receive the 2026 Grace Lachina Outstanding Senior Recognition Award.
It was moved by Commissioner Button, and seconded by Commissioner Osman, to approve the
selection of Gincy Heins as recipient of the 2026 Grace Lachina Outstanding Senior Recognition
Award.

The Recreation Supervisor informed that a letter will be sent to Gincy Heins inviting her to accept
her award at the April 24, 2026, recognition and that the rest of the nominees will receive letters
thanking them for their service to the Senior Center and the seniors in the community.
STAFF REPORTS (NO ACTION OR DISCUSSION REQUIRED)
The Recreation Supervisor: Reported on the success of the Boogie Night Mardi Gras Carnival,
February 27; Senior Spring Camp, March 30 -April 3, and Oxford Academy's Afternoon Teas and
Tunes on April 3 are both full; Lucky Charms Dining Center Celebration, March 13. Reminded that
Rainbow Cone will be selling ice cream at the Senior Center on March 12 and that twenty percent of
the proceeds will go towards Senior Center programming.
Commission Chair Skorupinski asked if any Commissioners will be needed to work the tea event.
The Recreation Supervisor responded that Oxford Academy students run this event, but
Commissioners are welcome to come to the event and observe.
The Recreation Director: Reminded Commissioners Form 700 is due by April 1; commission
recruitment starts April 6 and ends April 24 and that any Commissioner whose first term ends on
June 30 must reapply to serve a second term.
SENIOR COMMISSION MEMBER REPORTS FROM COMMISSION -AFFILIATED BOARDS,
COMMITTEES, SENIOR PROGRAMS/ACTIVITIES, AND REMARKS
Commissioner Button: Sunshine Club Board meeting; March 10 City Council meeting. Asked if
under the Non -Profit Grant Request program those non -profits serving multiple cities will receive
support or use of resources.
The Director responded that those non -profits more regional can continue to request consideration
of support by City Council.
Commissioner Machal: Kiwanis served 1200 meals at Cypress Youth Baseball Opening Day,
February 21. Praised Recreation Manager Kokot and staff for successfully moving the event
indoors due to weather.
Commissioner Nessary: Board meetings and bingo for both Senior and Sunshine Clubs; ad hoc
committee for Grace Lachina award; Boogie Night Mardi Gras Carnival; dining center birthday
lunch; Games for Brains; donated blood at the Red Cross blood drive at the Community Center;
Woman's Club 60t11 anniversary.
Commissioner Osman: Recognition of 60 years of the Woman's Club of Cypress at March 10
Council meeting; chair yoga; chair volleyball; March Youth Action Committee meeting. Announced
Marielien Yarc to be recognized as the Woman of the Year at the Americana Awards on March 21
and the annual Woman's Club Tea on April 11. Asked the Recreation Supervisor if the chair yoga
class will be offered twice a week.
The Recreation Supervisor responded that staff is looking into that.

Commissioner Reames: Enjoyed serving on the Grace Lachina ad hoc committee; City Council
meetings; oman's Club 60th anniversary. Will be attending the Ameri na Awards on arch 21.
Suggested Senior Center staff reach out to Ovation at Flora Park to inquire about having Senior
Center programs listed on their website.
Commission Vice Chair Croce: Boogie Night Mardi Gras Carnival; arch 4 Youth Action
Committee eeting; City Council meeting; spoke at Morris Elementary on behalf of the Cypress
Police Department during "Read Across Ameri. -" week, at which s ool staff spoke of needing
people to read to the students. Suggested enlisting seniors to be readers.
Commission Chair Skorupinski: Cribbage; Games for Brains; chair volleyball. Suggested Cypress
Senior Center chair volleyball participants play against other senior centers' chair volleyball teams.

Commission Chair Skorupinski adjourned the meeting of March 11, 2026, at 3:37 p.m. to the
regular meeting of April 8, 2026, to be held in the Senior Center Conference Room at 3:00 p.m.
