HomeMy WebLinkAbout04-08-2026 MinutesMINUTES OF A MEETING OF THE SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF CYPRESS April 8, 2026 The regular meeting of the Cypress Senior Citizens Commission was called to order at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, in the Cypress Senior Center Conference Room, 9031 Grindlay Street, Cypress, California. PRESENT: Commission Chair Skorupinski, Commission Vice Chair Croce, Commissioners Button, Machal, Nessary, Osman, Reames ABSENT: None Also present: Jeff Draper, Director of Recreation and Community Services; Ian Kokot, Recreation Manager; Shayna Gutierrez, Recreation Supervisor; Taylor Burtle, Recreation Coordinator; Andi Terri, Recreation Coordinator PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE The pledge was led by Recreation and Community Services Director Jeff Draper The Director introduced City Manager Shannon DeLong. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS (Limited to 30 minutes — three minutes per speaker, unless extended by the Commission) None. NEW BUSINESS 1. Approve Minutes — March 11, 2026 It was moved by Commissioner Button, and seconded by Commissioner Nessary, to approve the minutes of the meeting of March 11, 2026. The motion was carried by the following roll call vote: AYES: NOES: ABSENT: 7 COMMISSIONERS: 0 COMMISSIONERS: 0 COMMISSIONERS: Button, Croce, Machal, Nessary, Osman, Reames, and Skorupinski None None 2. Seniors Alert. Ind, pendent, & Living Safely (S.A.I.L.S.1 Program The Recreation Supervisor provided background on the staff report and recommended the Commission approve additional offerings of the S.A.I.L.S. program. Commissioner Machal asked if the program should be offered more than once a year. The Recreation Supervisor responded that staff would like to offer it more than once a year, but would depend on Community Outreach Officer Julie Marquez's schedule. It was moved by Commissioner Nessary, and seconded by Commissioner Osman, to approve additional offerings of the S.A.I.L.S. program. The motion was carried by the following roll call vote: AYES: NOES: ABSENT: 7 COMMISSIONERS: 0 COMMISSIONERS: 0 COMMISSIONERS: Button, Croce, Machal, Nessary, Osman, Reames, and Skorupinski None None 3. Senior Center Exterior Lighting Improvements The Recreation Manager provided a Powerpoint presentation on the staff report and informed the proposed project will go before City Council at the April 28 meeting. Commissioners asked questions of staff. Receive and file. STAFF REPORTS NO ACTION OR DISCUSSION REQUIRED), Recreation Supervisor: Volunteer Recognition April 24. Thanked the Commissioners for their participation in the March Senior Center events. Recreation Coordinator Burtle: Senior Spring C.A.M.P. week of March 30; Oxford Academy "Teas & Tunes," April 3. Recreation Coordinator Terry: Lucky Charms lunch cafe event; Eggstravanganza lunch cafe event; Karaoke Party lunch caf� on last Wednesday of each month. Distributed sign-up form for Mother's Day Garden Party Celebration on May 8. Spoke of a donation of craft supplies and storage racks to the Senior Center and will be inviting the donor to a future Senior Commission meeting to thank. Recreation Manager: Commissioner Appreciation Reception, April 30. Reminded Commissioners to RSVP to Executive Assistant Sara Salazar. Recreation Director: Announced the annual commission recruitment through April 24 and of the need to reapply for a second term if the first term expires June 30. SENIOR COMMISSION MEMBER REPORTS FROM COMMISSION -AFFILIATED BOARDS, COMMITTEES, SENIOR PROGRAMS/ACTIVITIES, AND REMARKS Commissioner Button: Attended chair volleyball; Sunshine Club meetings; Eggstravaganza lunch event. Commissioner Machal: Eggstravaganza lunch event. Commissioner Nessary: Sunshine Club board meetings; senior club bingo; Games for Brains; Plus 40's Dance; March birthday lunch celebrations; Teas & Tunes; _ Senior C.A.M.P.,_ online City Council meetings; Woman's Club meeting. Praised Recreation Specialist Jose Coronel-Rivera for the senior camp program. 2 Commissioner Osman: Youth Action Committee meetings; chair yoga and chair volleyball, Rainbow Cone Senior Center Fundraiser; Council meetings; Americana Awards. Announced Woman's Club Tea on April 11. Praised the Youth Action Committee members. Commissioner Reames: Teas & Tunes; chair volleyball; Americana Awards. Reported speaking with person who oversees Ovation website about sharing of resources between the Senior Center and Ovation senior housing. Welcomed the new City Manager. Reported of a Senior Center patron who expressed frustration about the new doors. The Recreation Supervisor responded that patrons are getting used to the new doors as they open differently than the previous ones and have presented a learning curve. Commission Vice Chair Croce: Lucky Charms lunch caf� event; chair volleyball; Trivia Showdown lunch caf� event; Eggstravaganza dining caf� event; Youth Action Committee meetings; Spring Egg Hunt. Praised the Youth Action Committee members. The Director thanked the Commissioners for participating in the Senior Center programs. Reminded Commissioners that they represent the City of Cypress and their actions may reflect on the City even though they may not be acting in an official capacity. INTRODUCTION OF COUNCIL MEMBER RACHEL STRONG CARNAHAN Council Member Strong Carnahan spoke of serving on the City Council. ADJOURNMENT Commission Chair Skorupinski adjourned the meeting of April 8, 2026, at 3:50 p.m. to the regular meeting of May 13, 2026, to be held in the Senior Center Conference Room at 3:00 p.m. SECRETARY TO THE SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION 3
