A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CYPRESS,
COMMENDING THE YAMAHA MOTOR CORPORATION, U.S.A.
ON BEING SELECTED AS THE 2000 CYPRESS COLLEGE AMERICANA
AWARD "DISTINGUISHED BUSINESS PARTNER" RECIPIENT.
WHEREAS, Yamaha , which originated as the Nippon Gakki Company in Japan in 1887, first
opened its doors in the United States in 1960, and in 1977, Yamaha Motor Corporation U.S.A. was
formed as a separate company; and
WHEREAS, establishing its headquarters in the City of Cypress in 1980, Yamaha Motor
Corporation, U.S.A. employs over 350 people and instills the spirit of volunteerism among its employees
to develop a better working relationship with the community; and
WHEREAS, initially, manufacturers of musical instruments, Yamaha , today, is a major producer
and distributor of motorcycles, marine engines and boats, wave - runners, all- terrain vehicles, among other
products; and
WHEREAS, Yamaha has actively supported the various organizations in the community which
include, among others, the Cypress Boys and Girls Club, Special Olympics, Hot Line of Southern
California, Orangewood Children's Home, American Red Cross, Cypress' D.A.R.E. Program, and the
Casa Youth Shelter; and
WHEREAS, Yamaha has provided scholarships of over $50,000 to seniors at Cypress High
School, and, as part of the Business - School Partnership program, has adopted the Morris Elementary
School in Cypress; and
WHEREAS, the Yamaha Motor Corporation received the Cypress Chamber of Commerce's
"Large Business of the Year" award in 1989 and 1998, and further bringing distinction to the corporation,
its Human Resources Manager, Mr. Phil Wendel, was honored as the "Man of the Year" in 1999 by the
Cypress Chamber of Commerce, and in 1990, was named the "Man of the Year" by Cypress College and
its Foundation; and
WHEREAS, in recognition of its outstanding contributions to the community, the Yamaha Motor
Corporation, U.S.A. has been selected by the Cypress College and the Cypress College Foundation to
receive the "Distinguished Business Partner" Americana Award for 2000; and
WHEREAS, the City of Cypress is very fortunate to have the Yamaha Motor Corporation,
U.S.A. as a member of the community.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Cypress does hereby
commend and extend CONGRATULATIONS to the YAMAHA MOTOR CORPORATION, U.S.A. on
receiving the "DISTINGUISHED BUSINESS PARTNER" Cypress College Americana Award for 2000,
and extends sincere Best Wishes for the future.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the City Council of the City of Cypress at a regular meeting held on
the 14th day of February 2000.
